The Construction project seeks to imagine possible spaces—possible abstract pictorial spaces, spaces of thought, and quasi-architectures. Using hard-edged axonometric geometric form (‘parallel perspective’) as a core pictorial language in conjunction with a random walk compositional process, the work develops an ambiguous play of hinged, folding/unfolding planes that encourage viewers’ constructive interpretive invention within the given constraints.
This first phase of the project, exhibited at LaMontagne Gallery in Boston in 2019, presented modestly-scaled acrylic-on-linen paintings featuring simple figure-ground situations, structured by specific, additive, often highly-saturated color. Conditioned also by the strict geometry, these figures represent distinct architectural spaces which evoke both the constructive qualities of perception and sensation as well as interpretation and thought.
